I knew that malamutes were bred to withstand cold weather - I just didn't realize they could withstand -42 degree cold weather! That is really impressive! I have a pitbull who has so little hair that you can see her pink skin underneath. When it gets below freeazing or it snows she has to wear little doggy boots and a dog blanket (that is just like a little shrunken horse blanket). I won't tell her about Ripley though or it will give her a complex :)

Thanks for sticking up for me guys :D I think I should offer to come sleep outside at their houses wearing what I wear to go outside here if they'll come up and sleep outside my tent wearing what they wear to go outside at their place. Bet that would make 'em shut right the hell up with the "shoulds" and "oughts" :D Heck, I'd probably be *hot* and have to take some of my layers *off* at their temps LOL

UrbanCowgrrl -- Ripley has the best fur coat and Malamutes are bred to haul sleds in the Arctic... she's more than happy to run around in the snow and piddle at these temps even if we don't go out with her. She doesn't stay out quite as long and we do have to feed her a bit more on the really cold days though. When Breakup starts, we may have to get her some leather booties just to make sure the melting snow doesn't form ice balls that bruise or cut her paws. If we were running her with a sled in the snow, we'd also need to get her booties in case she stepped on a sharp twig/rock/ice patch... but she's fine just romping around in the fluffy snow in the yard.

I have actually been wondering how your dog goes to the bathroom when it is that cold. Does he go inside? Do you have boots and jackets for him?

I would love to see the people who are being judgmental actually agree to come stay with you during the winter for a few days. You should offer. I'm 100% sure they'll say no.

Hey guys - as a resident of North Dakota for ten years, I can definitely empathize.

Temperature sensitivity is definitely a relative thing. When I moved from ND to California I was running around in shirtsleeves that first winter while just about everybody else was bundled up in jackets and hats leaving me to wonder what was the matter with these wimps!

However, by the second winter, my body had adjusted to California temperatures and now I was also wearing a jacket!
