Maiming of the Shrew

Or maybe it was a vole... hard to tell after the carnage. But in any case, our little Charlie appears to be quite the mighty hunter.

"What's the big deal?" you might ask, since cats nab rodents all the time. Well, we've had Charlie for several years now and, to the best of our knowledge, she has always been a strictly indoor kitty. She's at least 8 years old, probably closer to 10, and only has one fang left. And to top it off, she never ever puts her dainty feet on the yucky dirt, so she must have snatched this sucker as it ran out from under the deck. Pretty impressive for a first-timer!

Some folks might have been squicked if their pet brought a kill into the house, but like any good bush pet parent, we simply praised her for her catch, and kept Ripley away until Charlie had figured out how to "open the can" and eat her fill of the tasty morsel.

Guess we don't have to worry about whether she'll transition to a homemade raw diet, huh?

There are 2 ways a cat shows it's respect and affection. They present their butt to be sniffed (they only do this to those they trust) and give "presents". The presents can be fresh kills or favorite toys. I have several indoor-outdoor cats and a couple outdoor only cats. Someone left me a dead mouse on my front door mat then a few days later a newly fixed female dropped a vole at my feet then meowed at me until I told her what a good girl she was and thanked her. As soon as she walked away the vole went into the trash. I'd rather be presented with fresh kills but I have been given parts before. I worse is a tie ~ part of a squirrel head and a mouse butt (with an intact tail). Charlie will come in handy when the mice start thinking your place will be a better spot in the winter than their holes in the ground. My house here in Missouri was invested with mice when I bought it. With in three weeks, not a single mouse to be seen.

Love your posts!!!
